You're in trouble right from the start if you expect a little bitty rope or even a rope with some kind of chain at the business end, to control a horse. thanks.

How great it is to be able to have
these traditions take place within

Moderator's Response:

The laws, however, do have to change unfortunately. Businesses in our respective countries have only had to account for profits and financial management. Because they have not “had to” account for social costs and environmental costs, they have chosen not to. That has to change. That requires new climate legislation and new financial laws that minimize carbon pollution.

When we avoid paying for the social and environmental costs on the front end, the balance sheet is incomplete. Because, if we go far enough out, we then end up having to pay for the environmental consequences as costs 10 and 15 years down the road, and the public does not realize that those costs are related back to the initial events that caused pollution or health effects cumulatively down the road.

Environmental costs and social costs must be part of the triple bottom line accounting. Once the balance sheet includes these, then the choices that businesses will make to do certain things will be influenced by this triple bottom line accounting approach. That’s just the way business works. If they have to, they will. If they don’t have to, they won’t. It changes profit-seeking from short term gain to long term sustainability. If the planet is not working, neither will businesses.

"It’s up to us – not governments, to lead in the war against climate change"

Correct. The opportunity for governments to ram climate laws down our throats has passed. People must make fighting climate change profitable for business and economical for individuals, and in real dollars not simply through subsidies.

Moderator's note: It would appear, through some research, that this is a comment from a resident of the US. Circumstances are slightly different in the two countries regarding climate legislation and subsidies.
